Mara Brock-Akil: Chicago Ideas Week

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Mara Brock Akil is a trailblazer for women in television. This Northwestern University alum began her writing career in 1994 on Fox’s groundbreaking comedy-drama South Central. She moved on to the UPN series Moesha, earning the title Producer after four seasons. Later, Akil served as Supervising Producer on The Jamie Foxx Show, and in 2000, she created her own show, Girlfriends, which she and Kelsey Grammer executive produced.
